How do I choose a collar for my dog?
It can be confusing when it comes to picking out the best collar for your pup. From sizes and widths, to different styles, hardware options and designs, there are so many options! But, that's where we come in. We'll give you all of the information you'll need to pick out the collar best suited for your pup.
What collar size does my dog need?
If your dog is full grown, picking out a collar size will be easy. We always recommend measuring your dogs neck or an existing collar to be sure of the size they need. If you don't have a measuring tape, you can always make your own out of a strip of paper and measure your dogs neck that way. Once you know your dogs neck size, you can view the list of sizes and choose from there. Now, when it comes to puppies, it can be a bit tricky. We typically recommend that you get a size that'll grow along with your dog. So, if your puppy is in-between a small and a medium, we actually have an in-between size! But, sometimes it's best to wait to see how much your puppy will grow before investing in a life-long piece of gear for them.
What collar width is best for my dog?
Choosing the width of your collar mostly comes down to personal preference and what your dog is used to. For small dogs, we recommend 3/4" wide and sometimes 1" wide. For medium dogs, 1" wide and 1.5" wide collars are best. And for large dogs, unless they aren't used to wider collars, I always recommend the 1.5" width. All of our designs are sized appropriately for the three widths that we offer so they'll look great no matter what you choose!
How do I know which collar style to choose?
There are a wide variety of collar styles out there and it can get overwhelming! But, each style serves a specific purpose. Plastic buckles are great for dogs who don't pull often and just need a collar to hold their tags or to clip onto for walks. Limited slips and fabric martingales are styles designed to not choke dogs and are great for pullers and dogs in training as the loop acts as a way to tell the dog to slow down. For the really strong pullers, we have military grade austri-alpin cobra buckles. These buckles are often used in tactical gear and can hold up to just about anything your dog puts them through!
Does hardware color matter?
Unless your dog is water obsessed, the hardware color that you choose is completely up to what you think fits with the pattern best. However, if your dog frequents the water, it is strongly recommended that you select a collar with stainless steel hardware.
